Thousands of horses, ponies, donkeys and mules have received help from Bransby Horses over the last five decades. Founded in 1968 by Mr Peter Hunt, Bransby Horses is now one of the UK's largest equine welfare charities and has excellent facilities including a state-of-the-art Intensive Care Unit, a Specialist Handling Yard and a Rehoming Barn. Incredibly the charity relies entirely on public donations and gifts in Wills to fund its rescue and welfare work which costs in the region of 4.2M each year. With 434 equines currently in care on the 600 acre site just eight miles from Lincoln, the cost of caring is high and more foster homes are desperately needed.
“The current demand for rescue is high and we don’t want to be in the heartbreaking situation of having to turn horses away when they have nowhere else to go because we are full. Thankfully we have hundreds of wonderful fosterers and remain hopeful people will continue to open their hearts and homes to horses rescued by us so we can help even more,” said Head of External Welfare, Ryan Rouse, who has led rescue operations at the charity for the past two years.
The charity is working harder than ever to continue making positive differences to equines through rescue, rehabilitation, rehoming and education, and by providing a safe haven for those equines that cannot be rehomed.
Staff and volunteers work tirelessly around the clock to care for the charity’s rescued residents and to maintain the land. Visitors are welcome seven days a week and facilities include a gift shop, café, picnic area and play park. Bransby Horses was awarded the Visit England ‘Hidden Gem’ 2017 Award for the East Midlands region; a tremendous achievement for the charity and the hallmark of a quality family day out.
To celebrate 50 years of equine rescue and welfare the charity has lots of exciting events and activities throughout the year and a special exhibition is also open to the public at the Visitor Centre every day until the end of November. A highlight on the 50th Anniversary year events calendar is ‘Proms in the Paddock’, an evening of musical entertainment set in the idyllic grounds of Bransby Horses (tickets are available from the gift shop, online or by phoning 01427 788464).
Bransby Horses would like to thank people for their continued support over the years, as without public donations and gifts in Wills the charity would not be able to continue working to rescue, rehabilitate and rehome horses, ponies, donkeys and mules in need.
The charity is always in need of volunteers and the roles are varied, including gardening, fundraising, admin and events.
