Challenging times, but we are up for that challenge - NFU Vice President

14 June 2016,

NFU Vice President, Guy Smith will address members and guests at the NFU’s annual reception at the Lincolnshire Show on Wednesday 22 June at 10.30am, at stand 4-31 on the north side of the Main Ring.

At 11.15am, a very special presentation will be made by Toby Dennis, Lincolnshire’s Lord Lieutenant, of the British Empire Medal to BBC Radio Lincolnshire’s farming programme presenter and producer, Alan Stennett.

Speaking on farming issues at the reception, Guy Smith will say: “I expect most NFU officeholders feel they have taken office at a particularly challenging time, but there does seem to be a lot going on in the world of agriculture and politics at the moment. Against the backdrop of unsustainable farm gate prices for many commodities, we have additional threats such as the loss of key pesticides like glyphosate and the poor delivery of BPS (the Basic Payment Scheme). The simple fact is when farmers face tough times they need an effective NFU fighting on their behalf the most. The NFU is committed to meeting that challenge in our lobbying, both in the UK and in the EU.

“I firmly believe the long term outlook for farmers and growers is optimistic: we are a resilient, resourceful industry capable of weathering this storm. With a growing UK and world population, we’re best placed to supply top quality, safe food, produced by professional farmers from productive farmland. There is light on the horizon and farmers should be optimistic of a better future for all sectors.

“No matter what the outcome of the referendum, in either scenario, IN or OUT, the NFU recognises there is work to do in making sure British agriculture has a bright future.”
