Getting active and feeling good

6 May 2016,

Our charity of the year, Macmillan Cancer Support, take us through preparations and activities ahead of the 132nd Lincolnshire Show in June. Here's what they've been up to this month!

With just over two months until this year's Lincolnshire Show the excitement is building at the Macmillan camp and preparations are well underway. The marquee has been ordered, volunteers are being recruited and we have been on the hunt for inspiring, real-life stories about local people who have fought back against cancer to share with you.

People like Lorna Leaston, who we met last week. Lorna could hardly walk after treatment for oesophageal cancer just over a year ago, however thanks to Fiona and Aaron from the 'Macmillan Get Active, Feel Good Lincolnshire' project, she was ready to run the Lincoln 10k on Sunday 17 April! It's an incredible transformation and shows how beneficial gentle exercise can be in recovering from cancer. With Fiona by her side, and a lot of determination, Lorna gradually built up the distances she was able to walk by counting the trees behind her house. Now, she's bought her first pair of trainers in 30 years!

She completed the Lincoln 10k in aid of raising money for Macmillan Cancer Support alongside a group of other patients. So far, Lorna has raised a fantastic £266 - smashing her target of £100! You can visit her Just Giving page here. We couldn't fund services like the 'Macmillan Get Active, Feel Good Lincolnshire' project without the generosity of our supporters and for that we are eternally grateful.

We'll be sharing Lorna's story and others at this year's Show so you can see exactly how your donations are being spent in Lincolnshire. We'll also have a range of Macmillan health professionals there providing information about services and support available locally - and, of course, we'll be fundraising too so keep an eye out for our green t-shirts!

And, if you have too many Lincolnshire sausages, Fiona and Aaron will be there to put you through your paces, so watch out for news of this year's physical activity challenge!
